Most solar hot water systems use solar collectors or panels to absorb energy from the sun. Water is heated by the sun as it passes through the collectors.
Solar water heaters are very simple devices and a only minimal level of plumbing skills is required to perform maintenance on them. The primary heater box is lined with copper, PVC or other type of pipe, which can be patched or replaced by the average do-it-yourselfer in about an hour.
